The Messenger - Forlorn Temple / Demon King / Corrupted Future / Music Box / Final Boss Walkthrough (with images)

This guide for The Messenger is the final one, allowing us to finish the main story of the game. In this guide, we will be covering Forlorn Temple, the Demon King fight, the Corrupted Future and the Music Box.

WHERE HUMANITY USED TO STAND STRONG, LITTLE CARPENTERS SHALL CREATE THE PATH TO A REVENGE LONG OVERDUE

If you pay the shopkeep for a hint, he’ll tell you to go here in Forlorn Temple…

The quickest way to get there is to go back to the Tower of Time HQ, go through the first teleport portal from the left to Autumn Hills and proceed to this frame in Forlorn Temple…

Now in Forlorn Temple, the four Phobekins will have repaired the bridge for you, provided you’ve saved all of the Phobekins. Click here if you haven’t…

When you get to this frame in Forlorn Temple, go through the bottom entrance. You will see a portal to go back to 8 bit, but you’ll need to drop down and go back up to continue. But be careful! there is a bottomless pit beneath it, so when you fall down, grab onto the side and rope dart your way across to the other side to get back up.

Now make your way back and through the entrance above. Go through the bottom section, strike the switch and head upwards. Throw an energy shuriken at the enemy spitting fireballs at you, because he just becomes annoying when trying to get past all of this. Go through the next room and jump onto the rocket to blast your way upwards.

In the next room make your way to the next rocket, but you may be a little confused as it just seems to hit the bricks above. But I bet you didn’t know that you can direct the rocket as it is flying! You will use these rockets a lot in Forlorn Temple. You can also jump off mid-flight if you want some Time Shards.

Head through the left opening on the rocket, and you’ll be here…

Proceed onwards through some challenging but linear sections until you arrive at this frame in Forlorn Temple…

The downwards entrance will lead to a Power Seal, to which you’ll need to head upwards and go through the portal first. But we’ll cover all of the coins in Forlorn Temple in another guide, so just head upwards for now. Change to 8 bit and notice the switch in the top-left corner. Hit that, proceed onwards and keep hitting the switches above to open the next doors.

Keep going along the linear path through some challenging platforming sections and some fun rocket riding until you arrive at this frame…

From here in Forlorn Temple, you can head left to grab some health, upwards to grab a Power Seal, but we want to head top-right to proceed onwards. Keep going through some tight sections until you reach this frame…

This section may seem intimidating at first, but it’s all about timing. Look for the most opportune moment, and don’t forget to look ahead of you as well as to what is coming up. You may need to keep slashing at the same lantern and jumping until you find the right moment, but don’t wait too long or those saws will get you!

Once you get past that and proceed downwards, you’ll want to make your way over without killing any of the bats. Lead them to you and jump, strike and jump again up to the platform above. That or if you fall, there is a rocket you can use to blast your way up, but this game is all about feeling like a ninja, and the former way definitely does just that.

And now it’s time for the…

Demon King

The Demon King has only two stages to him, and all must be accomplished without any healing, good luck!

Stage 1

This stage is all about dodging the oncoming fireballs and waiting for the rocket to appear. Don’t worry too much about trying to slash and jump your way up to hit him, patience is key here.

You can preempt his attacks by noting which two of his four heads are about to shoot fireballs from their mouths.

And be careful not to run into the flames on the ground that the fireballs leave on impact.

When riding on the rocket, you’ll want to crash into him to do maximum damage. Upon falling down, you’ll want to slash at him as much as possible. You can do this even if he hits you with a fireball.

Stage 2

The big eye will sequentially drop orbs that will damage you on impact. You can’t strike at them, so use your time wisely to situate yourself in the perfect position in order to dodge them as they quickly disperse outwards.

Same as before, wait for the rocket and shoot upwards. But this time he will be below you and will shoot these orbs outwards again. All you need to do is get above a gap, and they won’t hit you.

Keep going until your character jumps off, and the demon will be blinded by the light that disperses into Forlorn Temple and the Demon King disintegrate.

You will then be rewarded with the Demon King’s Crown!

Now make your way to the right out of Forlorn Temple and into Bamboo Creek and go to a checkpoint that can transfer you back to the Tower of Time HQ and speak to the blue robe guy to the right of the Tower.

Interact with the portal (you may need to do this twice if you haven’t done so before) and the Demon King’s Crown will unlock the…

Corrupted Future

In the Corrupted Future, there is no map to check, but that’s OK as it is mostly linear. Just attack the magic butterflies in order to create new pathways in order to progress. Sometimes the butterflies won’t be where you need them to be, but that just means that they have been captured and you need to find the yellow blob that it is inside of and strike at it to set it free.

When you get to this frame, make sure to head up and not down.

You’ll want to go all the way up and wait for the spiked wall to go past you. Once it has, quickly run up and make your way right to the yellow blob to set another butterfly free. Then follow him and progress.

In the next section with the lanterns, don’t bother going down. Just rope dart your way across and go down.

For a while, it is quite linear until the end when you suddenly come across the Key of Courage!

But now, you’re going to need to use some of that courage. Whilst running away from the big sea monster, use every ring that you come across to rope dart and sling your way forward. You can also use your rope dart on the butterflies, but I would only recommend using that when you’re directly in front of the butterfly on a flat surface, because there is a chance of missing and being caught.

Upon reaching this section, use two shurikens to kill the first monster which will also hurt the monster behind it, and then rope dart to the second monster, killing it and propelling you forward.

Once you make it to the end and are back in the Tower of Time HQ, speak to the Prophet, go through some awesome story moments and proceed to…

Music Box

This is certainly a strange place, but an absolutely fantastic level!

First off, proceed right and up to this frame…

Wait for the falling platform to start making its way back up before using your rope dart to swing to the other side. Go through the portal and then make your way down the bottom-right side.

As you go down to your right, be mindful of the steam that’s coming out, strike the crystal and proceed back up and down the middle. Go down and to the bottom-left where there will be another crystal that will open the bottom-right entrance. This next bit will allow you to hit the crystal to go left and through the portal to the future. Go back to the previous frame through the bottom-right entrance, work your way through this section and proceed to the next.

Make your way to the checkpoint, and just beyond that is a crystal. Once stricken, you can proceed right and up. Time your movements just right and proceed to the left where you’ll need to be careful as the middle wall that you’ll hold onto is a conveyor belt. If it makes it any easier, the crushing platforms move in time with the tempo of the music, so the best way to continue is to get into the rhythm of the level. It is called the Music Box after all…

Now that we’re past that, through the next frame it is best to take out the bats as early as possible, otherwise they’ll just become a hindrance. Make your way through some other pretty standard puzzles until you get to this frame…

First off, you’ll want to jump onto the side of the vertical platform to get the attention of the skeleton bird. Jump back over to safety and take it out as it comes to you. Now for the platforming part. Grab on to the left side of the first one and hold on until it is almost at the top. Just before it gets there, drop down and rope dart to the next one, and repeat until you get to here…

You’ll need wait until the next vertical platform is at its lowest before you rope dart from the ring and propel yourself forward. There will be another one of those damn skeleton birds, so jump to the left and hold on to the right side of the middle part so you can swing at it when it comes near you. Now make your way to the end and rope dart onto the wall just below the platform sticking out.

Carry on for a few frames with some simple platforming puzzles until you reach this one…

Once again, take out the bat first, because they’re incredibly frustrating to deal with. There are more bats up ahead, so the best thing to do is make it to the end, hold onto the wall and kill them when they come to you.

Now this part is all about timing, needing to get to each part whilst keeping time with the music.

This next frame may seem confusing at first, but it is actually quite simple.

First, go through the portal directly above and strike the crystal. Now go back through the middle portal to go back to the future before moving onto the left side.

Proceed up through the left and strike the crystal, make your way over to the middle portal, go through it and fall to the floor. Now go back through the same portal so you are now 16 bit and on a platform, strike the crystal and proceed.

Now make your way to here and hang onto one of the platforms on its side until you can use the rope dart on the ring to propel yourself across.

In the next room, wait until this point to jump off and glide your way down.

In this room, jump from one moving platform to another and make your way to the top-right.

strike the crystal and make your way to the other side and proceed upwards.

Proceed to this frame where things get a little tricky. This part is all about timing your jumps so that you land safely onto the time platforms. Once you’re on one, ride it down to the portal, go through it and then jump off onto the wall to go over the next part. Repeat and rope dart onto the wall on the top-left to continue.

The next section is similar but less confusing. Make your way over to the crystal on the right and then back to go through the newly opened door.

The next part relies on quick reflexes. Rope dart onto the ring and as it propels you forward, strike the lantern and jump with the momentum.

Now for the next room. Go up through the portal in the middle and to the top-left to break the box there. Proceed down through the portal and strike the crystal. Make your way down and through the next closest platform, then head back up from the left and down from the middle.

Make some way through various somewhat challenging puzzles (all pretty similar to what we’ve already done). And do you know what this means…

Final Boss

Phantom seems to be controlled by the mask and shows brief glimpses of sanity.

First off, Phantom wants to play a little tennis with you. Hit the ball of time back and forth until it hits him. This ball will not always come straight to you, so you’ll need to move sometimes and even jump as it comes sometimes curve upwards. Once the ball hits him, approach and start hitting him. If you miss the ball (or it hits you), it’ll explode and send some bigger balls that can deal some hurtful damage.

He will then summon lines of future that contain shock waves. Jump over and avoid them when possible, and just focus on not taking much damage. You can also strike at the floating half-skulls to avoid the ground. But try not to jump too high, because there are shock waves up the top, too. Other times he will do this where you’ll need to stay within the lines rather than out, so it’s best to focus on jumping and attacking the half skulls here.

After a time, Phantom will summon some duplicates, but it’s easy to distinguish the real one (he’s the one not flashing). Attack him to disperse of the copies. It’s easy for him to still do damage to you even when you strike him because of his copies, so try to hit him with a shuriken from a distance.

Another attack of the Phantom will be to play on his organ to summon a giant mask. This will shoot laser beams at you, so make your way up to the wall and use the lanterns and the ring to avoid it. You can go through the lasers as long as you are airborne.

Other than all that, keep striking as much as you can until he is defeated. The section after is just button mashing, so good luck and congratulations!
