Sunless Sea: Zubmariner Edition - Switch Review (Quick)

There’s nothing quite like the somber feeling that washes over you when experiencing a Lovecraftian work of art, whether that’s through games such as the illustrious Bloodborne, film masterpieces like The Lighthouse, or novels of old like The Dunwich Horror. Thankfully, Sunless Sea captures this grim and grey unsettling atmosphere magnificently, with a civilisation of resilient but gruelly fellows clinging onto the sunken London that has fallen into the perilous depths of the ocean that they call home.

Good

  • Atmospheric horror
  • Wondrous writing
  • Reminiscent of board games
  • Captivating visuals and narrative
  • Smooth and responsive controls

Bad

  • Repetitive
  • Unintuitive user-interface
  • Overwhelming amount of text which feels claustrophobic on a handheld device

Final Score: 70%

Sunless Sea certainly has its place in the realm of should-buy indie games from the Switch’s ever-growing catalog. However, it isn’t without its flaws, being an experience best had on a larger screen, but not too big such as with a TV, given the nature of it being an intimate, text-driven adventure brought to life in video-game fashion. If you can stomach a steep entry curve, then you’ll have a good time, but wrapping your head around this unintuitive Victorian-ESC adventure game might be a little difficult for those inexperienced with the genre.
